| | Born in Detroit, MI on Jan. 24, 1914. Leland studied at the Cranbrook (MI) Academy, the University of Michigan, and obtained his M.A. degree from Stanford University in 1947. He then settled on the Monterey Peninsula where he remained until his demise in Pebble Beach on Oct. 11, 1987.
