A portrait, miniature and landscape painter, teacher, muralist and sculptor, Penelope Lingen was born in North Carolina and studied at Queens College in Charlotte. She moved to Texas in 1882 and took art lessons in Galveston from Maria Cage Kimball. She also attended Sophie Newcomb College In New Orleans, studying with Ellsworth Woodward and William Woodward. Then she went to the Art Institute of Chicago as a student of Albert Krehbiel and Lorado Taft.
