Born in Greenlaw, Scotland, George Linen came to America in 1834 and established a painting career in New York and New Jersey, but he also traveled including to Baltimore, Richmond, and Terra Haute.
He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In the United States, he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy and the National Academy of Design.
His place of death has been listed both as New York City and a farm near Bloomdale, New Jersey.
