| The following biography, submitted October 2005, is from Shirley Jones, daughter of the artist.
Samuel Kochmeister was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1887. He
immigrated to the United States in 1910 to escape the czarist
persecution of Jews in Poland and lived the rest of his life in New
York City. He died in 1963 in Queens, New York.
A self-taught artist, who painted under the name Samuel Koch, he
practiced his art while working in a factory to support his
family. He suffered from Parkinson's disease for the last 14
years of his life, but this did not diminish his will to express
himself on canvas.
Mr. Kochmeister's works were exhibited in a number of one-man shows at
galleries throughout New York state. He was known for his
primitive self-taught style of urban landscapes and still life
paintings, using oil paint exclusively.
His works have been exhibited in many museums such as the City Museum
of St. Louis, Baltimore Museum of Art, and in New York City at the
Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. The Art
Museum of Lucerne, Switzerland exhibited two of his paintings during
their exhibition of American Primitive Art.
Some of his paintings are exhibited in the permanent collection of art at the University of Arizona.
The Who's Who of American Art and the International Who's Who of Artists
listed Mr. Kochmeister's works in their 1949, and 1957 editions. A book by
Sidney Janis, titled They Taught Themselves listed Mr. Kochmeister and
his work.
