Biography from AskART:
| The following was submitted June 2004 by Ken Nahan, fine-art professional.
In
1983, Ken Kenan graduated with honors and received his Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree from Tulane University. In addition to his university
education, Kenan traveled to Europe where he executed drawings and
paintings under the guidance of his mentor and friend, Max Papart. He
also studied various printmaking techniques, executing lithographs at
Atelier Grapholith in Paris, and with Pierre Chave in Vence, France. He
also created etchings with Robert Dutrou, master printer for important
artists including Joan Miro.
The works of artist Ken Kenan
reflect his fascination with a stream of consciousness process of
creation. Although his techniques are varied, he often begins with no
pre-conceived ideas regarding the meaning or direction of a particular
work. From a few initial gestures, the works unfold as Kenan responds
and builds his compositions.
With influences ranging from
primitive and pre-Colombian art, to such modern masters as Calder,
Picasso, Klee, Tobey, Matisse, Tamayo, and Miro, Kenan creates work
intended to embody an aura of mystery and lyricism within simple
aesthetic constructs. In 1990, Kenan's work was accepted into
the ARCO collection. The following year, he returned from a one-year
sojourn in Paris, where he developed a new mixed media painting
technique and staged his first solo exhibition in Europe. Kenan is also
recognized in American References' American Artists: An Illustrated
Survey of Leading Contemporaries, in Louisiana Artists' Pages, a
limited edition art book published by the New Orleans Contemporary Arts
Center, and in The International Catalog of Contemporary Art,
published by Artsearch. The artist currently resides in Connecticut.
