One of the most acclaimed expatriate painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was pivotal in the establishment of the art colony at Egmond, Holland, keeping studios both there and in Paris.  In 1889 and 1900, he won silver medals at the Paris Expos and other prizes including the San Francisco Exposition of 1915.

According to the S. Grant Archives of American Art Journal 1992,  he won (showing 500 of 2815 characters).
