| | Born in Sussex, England on Feb. 20, 1817. Evershed studied civil engineering in England. He was engaged as such in the building of the Grand Trunk Railway in Canada before joining the Gold Rush to California in 1849. While making the cross-country trek, the self-taught artist painted Indians and western scenery. Returning to the East, he settled in Rochester, NY and became division engineer of the Erie Canal and the Niagara Power Plant.
