Biography from AskART:
| | Born in Montreal, Canada, Ewen Patterson later moved to Toronto. He began painting in the late 1940s, and his work was lush landscapes and interiors. However the influence of the Montreal Automatists pushed him toward abstraction. But he never fully embraced the non- representational, and images of landscapes became his trademark work. In the early 1970s, he began to do long, scroll-like landscapes and also figurative imagery. He also moved away from oil on canvas to sheets of gouged, painted plywood that depicted images of the cosmos. |
