Pierre Puvis de Chavannes was born in Lyon, France in 1824. He had to abandon his engineering studies at the Polytechnique because of illness and travelled in Italy during his convalescence. On his return to Paris he briefly entered the studio of Delacroix, and then spent three months studying under Couture. In 1852 he set himself up independently, although he enjoyed little success for some time.
His work was rejected by the Salon until 1861; he contributed to the Exhibitions regularly (showing 500 of 960 characters). |
