Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Mary Colton was a founder of the Museum
of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff as well as a noted landscapist, Indian
portraitist, sculptor, museum curator, and writer. Of particular
delight to her was painting the Hopi and Navajo Indians on site,
directly from life.
In Philadelphia, she studied at Moore
Institute and at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, 1904-09,
with Henry Snell and Elliott Daingerfield. She had obvious talent for
landscape (showing 500 of 3725 characters). |
