| The following, submitted February 2005, is from John R. Carpenter, descendant of the artist from La Mesa, CA Francis Bicknell Carpenter, also known as "Frank Carpenter, the Artist", was born on 6 Aug 1830 in Homer, Cortland, NY. He died on 23 May 1900 in the same town and was buried there in Greenwood Cemetery.
His father was Asaph Harmon (or Hammam) Carpenter, born on 28 June 1800 in Pomfret, Windham, CT, and his mother was Almira Clark, born on 26 May 1801. She died on 30 Mar 1885 in Homer, Cortland, NY and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Homer, Cortland, NY. Francis Carpenter married Augusta Herrick Prentiss on 6 January 1853 in Homer Cortland, NY. The "Dictionary of American Biography", Vol. 2, by A. Johnson, page 510 indicates Francis Bicknell painted four presidents and many other noble Americans. He fell out of favor due to Beecher-Tilton scandal. The last several years of his life he suffered from dropsy, dying in New York on 23 May 1900.
A 1866 hand-tinted lithograph by Bicknell is titled "President Lincoln and His Cabinet, Reading the Emancipation Proclamation." The lithograph was published by Edward Herline (lithography company, active c. 1840-1870)
