Constantin Chatov was a renowned portraitist, whose clients included Margaret Mitchell, Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh commissioned by MGM. While he was a young man, Constantin studied music. Upon the rise of Lenin in 1922, the Chatov family fled for New York. He was a concert pianist in New York and as a result of over-practicing Constantin injured his right hand which ended his career as a pianist. He then took up painting and became acclaimed for his figure studies, paintings and portraits.
He settled in Atlanta in the 1960’s where he and his brother Roman Chatov shared a studio and taught classes. He became an influential member of the arts community receiving, among many other awards, the 1983 “Governors Award in the Arts”. Constantin died in 1993.
