Biography from AskART:
| The following is from the artist: Born June 29, 1946, Ann Arbor, Michigan Primary Residence: Scottsdale, Arizona Subject matter: landscapes, figurative work including portraits Style of work: representational/impressionist Methods: Oil and watercolor Museums: Tweed Museum of Art, Duluth, MN ("Forest Tapestry", watercolor, purchased by the Tweed Museum in 1978)
I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan where I lived through high school. I have a brother, Robert, and a mother, Betty, who continue to live in Ann Arbor. I graduated from University High School in Ann Arbor, where I was fortunate to have a wonderful art teacher by the name of Irene Tejada.
I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL. I received my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA. I then returned to Chicago where I spent most of my working career in the Banking business, from which I retired in 2000. However, I always had an interest in art and painting since I was a child. I took art as an elective course during most of my junior and senior high school class years. In the Fall of 1973, I began part-time art courses in figure drawing and watercolor painting at The American Academy of Art, in Chicago. I was fortunate to study watercolor under Irving Shapiro, AWS, from whom I learned much about composition and design, and how to orchestrate a painting. I continued my part-time art courses at the Academy for 5 years, during which time I sold my paintings at art fairs.
I also began entering professional art exhibitions and had my paintings accepted in numerous shows. Finally, in August 1978, I resigned from the bank, and started full-time art courses at The American Academy of Art. I studied both figure drawing and oil painting from Arvydas Algminas, who was written up in AMERICAN ARTIST magazine sometime in the 1978-1980 time period. I finished my studies at The Academy in the Fall of 1980.
I then pursued a career as a professional fine artist from October 1980 through February 1985, and enjoyed considerable success and recognition. However, in February 1985, I left painting and returned to the banking industry. I found I was not able to make the nice living as an artist, which I had enjoyed as a banker. I retired from the banking industry in 2000 as a Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager.
In January 2003, I returned to my paintbrushes. Somewhat to my surprise, I found that I was not as rusty as I thought I might be if if ever returned to painting. I also found that with financial considerations no longer an issue, pleasure and satisfaction had returned to my painting. Subjects and geographic locations for my paintings are varied. Over the years, I have painted subjects from Chicago and the Midwest, California, New England, South Carolina, and Mexico, to name a few locations that have provide me with painting material. I also have painted comissioned portraits of Chicago area residents.
