| Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1825. Borthwick studied at the Edinburgh Academy until 1840. During the 1840s he sailed to NYC, and in 1851 arrived in northern California as a gold prospector and artist. His illustrations of mining activities were the first to appear in London newspapers. He left San Francisco in 1854 for Australia, and in 1860 returned to London where he wrote a book entitled Three Years in California which contains eight lithographs. Borthwick died in London about 1900. (showing 500 of 1020 characters). |
