| An engraver, sketch artist, and illustrator, Thomas Armstrong was born in England and studied engraving in London and Paris, He provided engravings for the "Illustrated London News".
He spent a brief time in Paris, but left there because of the chaos from the French Revolution. He arrived in Northern California, via Australia, in 1849, and was active in Sacremento and San Francisco, doing wood engravings and illustrating magazines, some with Christian Nahl.
At age 45, he died of lung congestion.
