Joe Anna Arnett received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Texas, Austin. She then moved to New York City, where she worked in commercial advertising for six years, eventually becoming a senior art director. For four years, in the evenings, she studied at the Art Students League.
In 1984, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and it was there that she married her husband, watercolor artist, James Asher.
