Biography from AskART:
| The following was submitted by Donald Davies, nephew of the artist: This article was written about Chauncey M. Adams by Mrs. John Walsh for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her talk reflects her local and state Winfield Scott Chapters' dedication to recognizing and documenting Artists, Artisans, Authors, Actors and Musicians ( "The 4 A's and M") who have contributed to our American heritage.
Chauncey Adams was born in 1895 in the Village of Unadilla Forks, Town of Plainfield, the son of John and Ellen Adams, and it was this small, picturesque community 20 miles south of the city of Utica, that provided the background for many of Mr. Adams' paintings. As a young boy it was his good fortune to pose for a well-known artist, Frank Hutchins, who maintained a summer home and art colony in the village. This brought him in close touch with artists so that, at an early age, he began to paint. This natural gift that he possessed was reflected throughout his attendance at grade school and high school.
Nearly all his life was spent painting in the upper Unadilla Valley. His work was confined to landscapes and still life and he preferred painting in or near winter woodlands, though he also found inspiration in old houses. He worked primarily in oils but also did some water colors, pastels and etching. During World War I, while with the U. S. forces overseas, he studied paintings in Paris and London. He later studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but was chiefly self-taught. For 12 years he taught in area schools, played the piano and organized a jazz band. He was an instructor in the Utica Art Students League, a founder of the Sherburne Art Society, taught an art teacher's class in Utica, Ilion and Sherburne, and was a member of the executive committee of the Cooperstown Art Society.
His pictures have been shown in Buffalo, Albany, Utica and Binghamton and in Spartansburg, South Carolina. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is from Stephen L Reese:
I have a large o/c painting of Mr. Adams, a scene along the Unadilla River. Mr. Adams lived in Unadilla Forks, New York. Previous to his death, he resided for many years in the village of Sherburne, New York, the home of the famous American painter, T. H. Matteson. Mr. Adams is buried in the Unadilla Forks Cemetery (Otsego County) which is about four miles from my residence in Leonardsville, New York. The monument at his gravesite has this information: Chauncey M. Adams . New York . PFC 207 Co MPC World War I. March 28, 1895 - April 27, 1963. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Note from Kathleen Parker, collector:
Chauncey Adams, impoverished most of his life, gave my Grandmother a beautiful painting of pink flowers for her as a wedding gift in 1923. He was so poor, he made his own paints. That painting was in our family for years in the same frame.
